The holiday season is here! No matter how you celebrate, we hope this is a wonderful season for you, full of good food, fun traditions, and spending time with family and friends. As fun as holiday parties are, they can have some . . . drawbacks. The more time you spend with people is more time for you to possibly be exposed to potential health threats. Never fear, though! There are plenty of ways you can strengthen your immune system this holiday season so you can focus on what really matters: spending time with your loved ones. Let’s talk about some simple, effective ways you can boost your immune system.
1. Eat immune-boosting foods. Have you ever heard that you are what you eat? It’s true! When you eat foods that naturally boost your immune system, your body will thank you! There are plenty of foods that can naturally boost your immune system, like citrus fruits, nuts, lean proteins, garlic, and yogurt. Include these foods in your diet to give your immune system a much-needed “leg up” during the holiday season.
2. Stay hydrated. Of course, this doesn’t just have to be water. There are plenty of different drinks that can help you stay hydrated, but water is still the best way to stay hydrated. In fact, adults are supposed to drink at least eight cups of water a day! Why? Water can help flush toxins from your body and keeps your immune system running smoothly.
3. Exercise. Exercise can help relieve stress and gets your blood pumping, which can help you feel refreshed and ready to conquer your next challenge! Ideally, aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity every day. If you can’t fit in 30 minutes, though, some exercise is always better than none. Take a 10-minute break and walk around the block or do some pushups. If you need some quick and easy exercise options, opt to take the stairs instead of the elevator or park a little farther away from the grocery store so you get in a few extra steps. Every little bit of exercise you fit in will add up and benefit your immune system.
4. Get enough sleep. Try to get 7–9 hours of sleep every night. Your immune system works hard for you while you sleep. Too little sleep may compromise your immune response and may also get in the way of your body’s ability to produce special immune modulators called cytokines, which help coordinate your immune response. A lack of sleep can lead to a vicious cycle that can impair your immune system and leave you feeling less than your best.
5. Manage Your Stress. The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be the most stressful. Manage that stress by practicing meditation, mindfulness, or yoga to bring a few minutes of peace and quiet to your day. Even just 10 minutes of mindfulness or meditation can help clear your mind and help you focus. Take breaks for yourself and make time for your hobbies to keep your stress levels low. After all, your immune system works best when you’re not stressed.
6. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol. These activities aren’t good for you, and they may suppress the immune system. Avoid smoking and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol to give your immune system its best chance of protecting you this holiday season.
7. Keep your hands clean. Sometimes, the simplest practices can have the biggest impact. Washing your hands may feel like an obvious suggestion to add to this list, but it’s one of the best ways to keep yourself safe from health threats you encounter throughout the day. Wash your hands with soap for 30 seconds before you eat, after using the bathroom, and regularly throughout the day. Avoid touching your mouth, eyes, and nose since these are some of the main ways germs enter your body.
8. Socialize with people you love. Yes, being in large crowds could expose you to germs, but you shouldn’t avoid people entirely. Healthy relationships are also a great way to boost your immune system! There are plenty of ways to spend time with those you love in a safe way. Laughter is also a great way to relieve stress and to boost your immune system. Spend time doing what you love with the people you love to strengthen your immune system.
